Technology and Security

The world today is a ever changing place. It is much different now than it was only 20 years. Through the use of technology our everyday lives have gotten much easier but, what is the cost? With millions of people on social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook where personal information is so easily accessed people are losing their privacy all together.

Almost everyone I know has Facebook. It is a very handy tool for keeping in touch with friends and making new ones. The games and chat features take more of my day then I care to disclose, but most who use it, including myself don’t think about the lack of privacy there really is. People think that setting privacy standards high isn’t that big of a deal but you need to realize that every comment, picture, and conversation on any social networking site is saved and can be accessed at anytime by almost anyone. This is truly scary; the potential for job loss, respect, and dignity is something that everyone who uses these sites needs to understand completely.

If people are going to keep using social networking site like they do a few changes need to happen. No one should put their full name, address, or phone number on them because it is just easy picking for identity thieves. Also you should never put pictures up or have pictures of yourself or others drinking, doing drugs, or any other illegal activity because this could easily come back to haunt you in the future with potential employers ect. Finally people need to stop posting every move they make on social networking site because it can lead to physical and sexual abuse from predators unknown. If these tips are followed then there is no reason sites like MySpace and facebook represent a threat no more than sites then a phone call.
